Nursing Shortage

It is being predicted that, with the aging of baby boomers approaching their retirement age, there is going to be a huge shortage of nurses in Canada. During my first semester, in the development of self course, I came across an article that clearly indicates that there are going to be a huge shortage of nurses in the health care industry.
I think this is the perfect time for individuals to join the nursing profession, which allows opportunity for helping people in need. But it is also true that there are not enough seats available for students to get enrolled in nursing schools. The number of students applying to nursing school far outnumbers the spaces available.

Why did I choose nursing as a career?

When I was in India, I used to work as a dietician in a small hospital. There I used to observe the nurses taking care of their patients. The way they interacted with their patients was really very touching. Even amongst their busy schedule, they used to find time to spend with their patients. Whenever I was in the paediatric ward, I used to love the relationship the nurses had with the little kids. I enjoyed watching the kids playing with the nurse or a nurse reading a story to the kid. At those moments I used to envy the nurse and wished I was a paediatric nurse.
When I came to Canada, I got a chance to change my profession. So I embarked upon the journey of becoming a paediatric nurse. I hope one day I would be able to become a good professional paediatric nurse.

technology and communication

In my opinion technology is really helping a lot to overcome the communication barrier in health care. Many patients get admitted to the hospital who are either not able to speak English or understand the language. Now a days many hospitals uses a service called language hotline, where they have interpreters for specific languages to help the nurses deal with the patients.
Some hospitals are also thinking of setting up videoconferencing technique to help nurses overcome the communication barrier they face with non-English speaking patients. In video conferencing an interpreter sitting in a remote area can observe the patient and the nurse at the same time and would be better able to guide them both on how to overcome the language barrier.

My Beliefs on Nursing

I can't really believe my first semester is almost over. It seems as though it has just started. My learning experience throughout the first semester has been amazing. I have learned so many things in this semester and I have so much more to learn. When I first decided to choose nursing as a career I was not sure if I was on the right track. After my first semester, i have realised that I took the right decision.
In the YouTube I have seen a number of videos about the nursing shortage in Canada and now I can't wait to join the working force. I think nursing is a very rewarding profession. Nursing is not only a job or career but also a way to help people in their most vulnerable phase of life. I believe that if I can help someone through nursing, I would be able to make a small difference to the mankind as a whole.

malabika's first blogg

Hi

my name is Malabika and this is the first time i am trying to create a blogg. I am a student, married for the last two years and have an adorable baby boy of seven months. I am a student of BSc Nursing at the university of ontario institute of technology.

I think blogging can be very effective, if we want to relate or share our ideas with other people, wherever they may be living. Being a first year student of nursing, I think the nursing blogs will really help me a lot whenever i would have any confusion. Whenever i would have any question i can post it in my blog and also visit other nursing bloggs and consult with someone who is already a registered nurse. Blogging is great for sharing any kind of ideas and are able to connect poeple from different parts of the world regardless of age, sex, gender and profession.
